BIFFES-2014

I got up today morning thinking about the movies I had seen during the Bangalore International Film Featival- 2014. Though it was just a 2 and a half days activity for me where I could just manage 8 movies, it left a deep impact on me. The Festival otherwise was a 7 days of showcase of movies around the world and different genres.

I have a tilt towards the Iranian, Turkish and other islamic movies. I like to see their culture and their stories. Most of the movies show inhuman treatment to female in their region. The movies are mostly banned in their own country and the Film Festivals are a great opportunity to catch these rare genres

The Movies which I selected to watch are:-

1) The Paternal Home(Iran)
2) Stonning of Soraya(USA)
3) Omar(Palestine)
4) Labor of Love (India)
5) Night Of Silence(Turkey)
6) Winter Sleep(Turkey)
7) 2 Days One Night(Belgium)
8) Bad Hair (Venezuela)

I tried to cover all genres of movie like Country Focus, Asian Competition,Gender Violence,Cinema of World.

This was my 3rd chance to attend the film festival and I am totally in love with the concept and opportunity to watch outstanding piece of art.

My favourite of the lot which has left the deepest impact on me is the Labor of Love.

Set up in Kolkata during the industrial recession is a story of a couple and their daily affair with the difficulties called life. The film beautifully depicts the unsaid love, understanding between a married couple.

The violence against the female gender cannot be shown more brutally than the films like Paternal Home and Stonning of Soraya. There was evident noise and uneasiness in the theatre when the Soraya was stonned even by her sons. The movie gave me a goose dumps.

The Paternal Home showed how a father and a son can kill a daughter and a sister for the honor of their family. Both these movies speak volumes about the way women are treated around the world especially in Islamic countries.

2 Days and One night was a breath of fresh air. The story was simple and beautifully executed. The Lady who was suffering from the ill health had the challenge to save her job which the management had decided to do away with by paying bonus to the rest of her colleagues. The story evolves as to how she convinces people to let go their bonus for her sake. It was a nice movie.

Bad Hair was about the obsession of a boy with straight hair. The only purpose in his life was to get rid of his curly hair which he thought was the cause of his bad looks and hence the hatred of his mother.

The BIFFS was a great learning experience, it was also my first solo trip to theatre after having a baby.

Looking forward to BIFFS-2015.biffes.in

PIFF 2010

About Elly

Director-Asghar Farhadi

The opening film at PIFF 2010 was indeed a well made suspicious and mysterious movie.

The film is about a young lady Elly who is into a forced relationship with her fiancé. Forced to such an extent that she gives away her life. The relationship which she wants to break off but the fiancé' wouldn't let her go.
One sentence in the movie that described her situation and her state of mind is "A bitter ending is better than an endless bitterness".

The main character Sepideh (Golshifteh Farahani one of my favorite after I have seen her Fish Fall in love) has been shown as a woman with rare character, the lady who mostly takes all initiatives and which finally becomes the cause of catastrophe for the entire group on their outing.

The movie as all other Iranian movie captures the natural beauty of all characters and location of shoot. The abandoned villa at the seafront of Caspian Sea should be an ideal place of holiday for all lovers of nature. The fun, picnic and stay of three families are shown beautifully. Dumb charades sequence makes it a universal games during a group outing. The movie which started as a fun movie with teasing and leg pulling of Ahmad who comes in search of wife from Germany and finds Elly as his perfect partner, the movie slowly take the path of mystery with Elly being disappeared. There occurs some classic sequence of one lie to cover the other lie, badmouthing and quarrels between couples. The not so confident fiancé aliasing as brother of the dead Elly.

All in all a finely made movie only a bit stretched which makes viewers impatient. The unveiling of mystery somehow keeps you seated.
